Shading is the "aha!" moment in Zentangle. It's what turns a flat drawing into a sculptural masterpiece. With just a pencil and a blending tool, you can create depth, drama, and dimension that transforms your tile.

1

Find the Light

In traditional art, you always consider where your light source is coming from. In Zentangle, we have more freedom—but understanding light still matters.

•
Overlap = Shadow: Where lines cross or shapes overlap, add graphite to create instant depth.
•
Edge Shading: Darken the outer edges of a shape to make it appear to recede.
•
Consistent Direction: Choose a direction for your light and stick with it throughout your tile.

The Power of the Tortillion

A tortillion is a small paper blending stump. It's the secret weapon of Zentangle artists.

"Never smudge with your finger."

The oils from your skin can create uneven shading and may damage the paper over time. Always use your tortillion.

•
Small Circles: Use gentle circular motions to create smooth, smoky gradients.
•
Build Gradually: It's easier to add more graphite than to remove it. Start light.
•
Clean Regularly: When your tortillion gets dirty, sand it or use a fresh one.

Contrast is Key

Don't be afraid of the dark. Deep shadows make your highlights sing and create the drama that makes Zentangle art captivating.

Light Areas

Leave parts of your tile completely white. This creates contrast and makes your shading pop.

Dark Areas

Layer graphite gradually to build rich, dark shadows. Be bold—deep shadows add dimension.

The Deeper Lesson

Shading isn't just about art—it's about learning to see the world in layers. Light and shadow, highlight and depth: this is the dance of existence.
